Westin Harbour Castle Port Cochere

General Info

About the Project

Project Description

The Westin Harbour Castle Port Cochere lighting redesign project aimed to revamp the entrance area, enhancing the light quality while drawing inspiration from the natural forms of ice. The concept was to mimic the varying densities of ice, which create captivating light and shadow interplays through their transparent and opaque qualities.

This design not only aimed to improve the visual appeal but also to address the functional needs of the space, providing adequate lighting levels while maintaining a sense of artistic flair. The inspiration from ice formations led to a design where light transmits through gaps, creating a play of light and dark, enhancing the spatial experience.

The project faced significant technical challenges, particularly in aligning the lighting fixtures with the ceiling’s faceted forms. This required precise coordination to ensure that the conceptual vision was effectively realized while also improving the overall illumination within the space.

Situated on Toronto’s Harbourfront, the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel is an architectural marvel featuring two towering structures and extensive facilities, including a unique revolving restaurant offering panoramic city views. The port cochere serves as the grand entrance to this prestigious venue, setting an impressive tone for visitors.

Incorporating the natural aesthetics of ice, the redesigned port cochere becomes a space where light dynamically interacts with the architectural elements, creating an inviting and memorable entrance. The ceiling's faceted design not only serves as an artistic statement but also enhances the functionality of the lighting, providing a harmonious balance between form and utility.

The project exemplifies how well the design integrates with the existing architecture, achieving a harmonious composition that complements the hotel's grandeur. It demonstrates a scientific understanding of light characteristics, effectively using intensity, contrast, and distribution to enhance the environment. The seamless synthesis of lighting design with the architectural elements enhances the built environment, showcasing meticulous attention to detail.

Successfully overcoming aesthetic and technical challenges, the project highlights the team’s expertise in crafting a space that is both functional and visually striking. Sustainable lighting solutions reflect stewardship for environmental impact, and the innovative approach challenges industry norms, introducing creative and original lighting solutions.

Artistically, the project stands out for its expressive use of light and form, creating an immersive experience that captivates guests. This exceptional transformation of the port cochere not only elevates the user experience but also sets a new standard for lighting design excellence in the hospitality industry.
